The Green Man Review

December 9, 2020

The Green Man in Ropsley is the winner of numerous awards including Camra Pub of the Year and “Lincolnshire’s Best Pub”. After sampling their wares during our October half term trip to Church Barn, it was easy to see why.

Over our 4 day short break, we ate from The Green Man a whopping 3 times! Twice we made use of their takeaway service and once we ate in. We loved it every single time.

Meal 1 : Fish & Chips Takeaway

As soon as we set foot in the cottage on our first night, we knew we wouldn’t want to leave again. Luckily I had spotted on The Green Man website that they did a takeaway service so we got online and booked us all some dinner.

Mr M and Freya went for classic fish and chips, I had scampi and chips and Poppy had her all time favourite – garlic bread. Unfortunately, for some reason the garlic bread meant that we couldn’t have the order delivered, but our cottage was literally 3 minutes away from the pub so Mr M didn’t mind walking down to collect dinner.

Dinner was incredible! The portion sizes were very generous and the food was delicious. The fish and chips were easily as good as any I’ve ever had, my scampi was delicious and I also wolfed down the remainder of Poppy’s garlic bread.

Meal 2: Afternoon Tea

For our second meal at The Green Man, we booked ourselves a special treat of afternoon tea. For this meal, we would actually be eating in at the pub, but they were very well organised and kept up with all Covid measures and restrictions. (and wow – will I be glad when I don’t have to add that disclaimer to every review!)

The afternoon tea was fabulous. We were brought out a large pot of tea for me, Mr M & Freya to share and Poppy had an orange juice (which they didn’t charge us for!)

The actual tea itself started with a basket filled with sandwiches, rolls and wraps of all diferent flvaours. I particulary loved the tuna ones, but they were all delicious.

The rest of the tea came on a picnic table, a miniature one, but an actual picnic table. The presentation was outstanding. Included in the selection were macarons, scones, brownies and some kind of eton mess/trifle thing. There were also little bottles of juice (which I’ve never seen on an afternoon tea before). I cannot remember what the juice was made up of, but I think it was everything green – apple, kiwi, cucumber etc. I was actually surprised that I really liked it, even though I never normally like anything vaguely healthy!

We were really impressed with the afternoon tea. At £16.95 it was really good value for money, and while it may not have been the fanciest afternoon tea we’ve ever had, it was definitely one of the tastiest!

Meal 3: Pizza Takeaway!

When we planned our trip, we had only intended to have two meals from The Green Man. After enjoying our two previous meals so much and after spotting the pizza menu on the website, we decided to have on extra treat and order takeaway pizza while we enjoyed a Halloween night in the cottage, watching Strictly and Hocus Pocus.

I opted for a goats cheese and caramalized red onion pizza, while Freya shared a pepperoni pizza with her Dad. Poppy decided to try the fish and chips. The piece of fish was bigger than her head so we all head to help her finish it.

The food was once again absolutely amazing and there was far more than we could eat. (Hooray of leftovers) It felt like all the quality of good restaurant food, but in the comfort of our own home (or holiday home, in our case)

You may notice that I only have photographs of the afternoon tea. That’s because the other meals didn’t last long enough for me to take a picture. We were so eager to eat them that we wolfed it down!

If you happen to be in the Ropsley area, near Grantham, I cannot recommend enough that you try out one of the options for food at The Green Man. Heck, I’d even recommend you make a special trip out there, just to sample the food. (When Tier restrictions allow you to) We absolutely loved everything we tried and will definitely be heading back again as soon as we are allowed.
