The Secret Wishlist of a Geek

July 28, 2020

I can’t quite believe that my next birthday is now one day away! I know I say this every year, but where is the time going? We’re not going to mention how old I’m going to be tomorrow – we’ll deal with that horror later!

As well as the dread of ageing, birthdays always bring one very important question: “What do you want for your birthday?” Cue hours of my trying to come up with appropriate gift ideas for a sensible, mature, grown-up women of thirty-ahem, never mind.

The truth is, I don’t really want anything sensible or mature. I’m actually a bit of a geek, nerd… call it what you will. What I really want for my birthday (and Christmas, and any other random times in between), is a heap of merchandise and memorabilia from my favorite TV and film franchises, that has absolutely no practical function other than being freaking amazing!!

In case you’re curious, here is the secret wishlist of a geek…

Galadriel Headdress from Lord of the Rings

At £150, this is one of the most expensive items on my wishlist, and for that reason probably the item that’s been on the wishlist the longest. I’m a huge Lord of the Rings fan (as is my husband and now my children) and between us we already have a number of items from the official LOTR memorabilia range. I don’t know if I’ll ever get around to actually buying this headdress, or what the heck I’d do with it if I did, but it’s certainly fun to dream.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer “Sunnydale High” hoodie. – £14.99

As a teenager, Buffy The Vampire Slayer was one of absolutely not-to-be-missed TV series, and to this day is probably the series that I’ve re-watched the most times. Although I definitely wouldn’t want to go to Sunnydale High, I would love one of these “Class of ’99” hoodies. “If the apocalypse comes, beep me!”

Truffle Shuffle

Truffle Shuffle is one of those websites where I just want everything. They have merchandise from every film, TV, gaming and music franchise you can think of and some that you probably have forgotten all about. There’s Disney, Star Wars, Friends, Stranger Things, even Wallace & Gromit.

I particularly love that they have some really retro stuff from TV shows from when I was a kid. I could happily spend hours browsing their catalogue. It was hard to narrow it down to my top picks from the website, but I think my top 3 were:

Disney Princess mug – £13.99

Fun House T-shirt (Who didn’t love this show as a kid?!) – £14.99

Gizmo Pyjamas – £15.99

EMP

EMP is another website that I could happily browse all day, although I’ve never actually taken the leap to purchase something. It has a slightly edgier feel than Truffle Shuffle, but there is still plenty of lovely merch to choose from. My top picks from EMP were:

Harry Potter Time-Turner – £64.99

Beauty and the Beast Belle prom dress – £92.99

Khaleesi mug – £12.99

Funko Pops

I’ve lost count of the number of Funko Pops I currently own, but I always want more! It feels like every time I think I have all the ones I want, another one pops up and then I need that one as well. Currently on the top of my to-buy list are these little beauties. (All found on Amazon, for assorted prices)

Mean Girls Vest Top

Mean Girls was one of the most influential films of my youth. I could probably quote it word-for-word if I tried. I’ve even got Miss Mess addicted This vest top is the first step in my Regina George themed outfit that I have planned out in my head. Plus it suits me perfectly – I have occasionally been called a bit of a drama queen.

Labyrinth T-Shirt – £6.95

I’m not sure if I’ve ever mentioned this before but Labyrinth is our favourite family film. It’s a joint obsession me and Mr M shared before we had children and now we’re merrily passing on that obsession to the girls. Our house has Labyrinth posters, books, Funko Pops, coasters and so much more but I would definitely love to add this t-shirt to my collection. The worm is absolutely one of my favourite characters from the film.

Anastasia Music Box – £263.48

And finally, we have a very recent addition to my wishlist, as it just came up on my Etsy recommended list this evening. Anastasia is by far my favourite non-Disney animated movie and I have always dreamed of having a replica of the music box from the film.

There are a number of versions of Etsy, some of which are more affordable than this, but as this is a wishlist I thought I’d go for the most expensive I could find. It really is a thing of beauty.

And so we reach the end of my wishlist, although really I could probably go on and on. I don’t know if I’ll ever get around to buying any of these, but I certainly do like to look at them.
