*Lifestyle | My Ideal Home Improvements – Kids Edition*

April 28, 2017

Spring is the perfect time for some serious cleaning and home improvements.  There’s just something about the lighter days and sunnier weather that makes you want to dust off the cobwebs and freshen up your home.

We’ve lived in our current house for over 10 years now and there are some areas that are in desperate need of a face lift.  After the ups and downs of the past few years, I have decided now is the time to give our home some much needed attention.  So, when VELUX blinds invited me to write a post about my dream home renovations I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to make some plans.

Top of my renovations list is the girl’s bedroom.  A couple of years ago we decided that they would share a bedroom, leaving the spare room as a playroom for their hoarde of toys. However, we never actually got around to redecorating their bedroom so it’s still dark blue with suns and moons. While it was a lovely, soothing nursery space both girls are desperate for something a little brighter and less babyish.

Having two very individual children with their vastly different and ever-developing tastes, I’ve decided it will be best to keep the walls and carpets very neutral. I want to create a blank canvas and then use a variety accessories to infuse the room with personality.

I’m going to let each girl choose their own set of bed bed linens to suit their own taste.  You can usually get a very reasonable set from the local supermarkets.  I recently ordered a Paw Patrol bedding set from ebay for about £15, so you don’t have to spend a fortune to get the look you want.

I love finding easy and affordable ways to create unique artwork to hang on the walls.  I often use posters from childrens’ magazines or pretty greetings cards.  Another fun alternative is to get the girls to draw their own pictures which can then be put into frames for a lovely, personalised decoration.

Finally, I’d probably pick up some new curtains or blinds to add a pop of colour to the room.  As I was browsing through the VELUX Blinds website, I really liked the variety of different blinds that were on offer.  Both of my girls would absolutely love these Disney blinds, with a variety of different pictures to choose from.

I’d certainly be a fan as well, as they are also blackout blinds which might help with their sleep patterns. They’re little devils for staying up late and waking up early.

Sadly, I don’t have a suitable space in the girls room to have VELUX windows fitted.  My sister in-law has them in her kitchen and they’re such a beautiful feature, letting in lots of lovely natural light.  I’m very jealous.  I wonder if I could convince Mr Mess that we need a loft conversion?

The best thing about using accessories to add character to a room is that they can be easily changed around as the children get older and their tastes change.  I wonder how long it will be before the princesses are exchanged for pop stars. (Please God, not Justin Beiber!)

I’m hoping to get the re-decorating done over the Summer, so I’ll be sure to put a before and after post up so you can see the transformation.

I need one of those Disney blinds! I currently have a very dull purple one but I could so change it for one of these! Decorating my room is something I love doing!
