Dear Diary: Under the weather

I suppose the post title kinda says it all…

For the past week and a half, I’ve been fighting off a particularly nasty virus.  The kind that leaves you completely wiped out, with a sore throat that seriously makes you look at death as a pleasant alternative.  At certain times, it felt like my throat was full of razor blades, sandpaper and a cactus all at the same time.

According to the medical degree invested in my by the power of Google, my symptoms were either Strep throat, Tonsillitis, Glandular fever or throat cancer.  Nothing to worry about then?

The thing is, I’m never ill.  I mean, not really.  I do get the odd cold virus or stomach bug, but they tend to dissipate really quickly and they hardly even break my stride.  This one totally floored me.  I can’t remember a time in the past 10 years when I’ve been unwell for more than a few days at a time.

I must have used hundreds of pills – paracetamol, ibuprofen, lozenges – you name it.  Anything to make me feel better.  Hot drinks, cold drinks, sorbet I tried the lot.  Nothing seemed to work for more than a few minutes at a time.

Even now, I can still feel the odd twinge in the back of my throat and I’m starting to wonder if there’s any permanent damage to the tissue back there.  It’s pretty painful when I yawn and don’t even get me started on sneezing!!

The worst thing of all is that it’s left me with zero energy in the evening.   I somehow managed to struggle through and make it to work every day, and didn’t have to miss out on any of the big calendar events I had planned, but in my general life I’ve been completely washed out and unproductive.

Plus I was spending most nights sat on the sofa watching Sex and the City re-runs, as I just couldn’t get comfortable to sleep.  It was utterly depressing.

My blogging in particular has taken a hit.  I had built up a pretty good social media routine and I felt like I was making serious progress and suddenly I couldn’t be bothered to send a single tweet (although I did have a lot of fun with Twitter on Eurovision night).

Thankfully, I am starting to feel much more like my old self and will hopefully get back into the swing of it.  I’ve written a couple of posts in the last few days and I have lots more planned for this week.  So, hopefully all my hard work won’t be for nothing.

On that note, I’m off to make a cup of tea and then start to get ready for bed.  I’ve only got one more week of work left and then it’s the half term holidays – and I have lots to look forward to there too!

Have a good week!  I’ll be back with another diary entry next weekend
