Disney Era Tag – The Golden Era

I was ridiculously excited this afternoon when I checked my Twitter and found that Jamie from Once Upon A Blog had tagged me in a Disney themed tag post.  I think I’ve only been tagged in one post before, and that wasn’t Disney, so I literally dropped everything and started writing this post.

Before I could write this post I had to do a little research.  I wasn’t 100% sure of which films made up the Golden era  of Disney Animation.  I knew that it was the first era, but wasn’t certain where it finished.

Google offered up a number of different opinions, so I finally decided to go with the description as described on the blog where this tag originated.  According to Amy from Scariel’s Grotto, the Golden Era consists of 5 films: Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, Pinocchio, Fantasia, Dumbo and Bambi.

Now, I’m going to admit that this is not my specialist era from the Disney Universe (I’m more of a Renaissance girl) but I’m stepping out of my comfort zone for a while.

So, without further ado, here are my answers

1. Any unseen films?

Nope! Seen them all.  (But then, there are only five!)

2. What is your favourite film of the era?

I’m a Princess girl, through and through so it would have to be Snow White and the Seven Dwarves.

3. What is your least favourite film of the era?

This may be a controversial answer but I’d have to say Bambi.  I’m not really a fan of the all animal movies generally, and I especially can’t stand films that kill off cute animals.  So Bambi would definitely not be a film I’d choose to watch over and over again.

4. Who is your favourite main character?

I really think I have to say Dumbo.  He’s so flipping cute, with his big floppy ears, and he goes through so many tough times I just want to gather him up and give him a giant cuddle.

5. Who is your favourite villain?

Along with every other person I’ve read so far, it’s got to be the Evil Queen.  She’s just fabulous and she’s the perfect Disney villain.  Treacherous, deranged, murderous and glamourous to boot.  If I didn’t want to be a Disney Princess, I’d want to be the Evil Queen!

6. Who is your favourite sidekick?

I was all set to say Jiminy Cricket as I love the way he guides and mentors Pinocchio.  I feel like everyone needs a Jiminy Cricket on their shoulder.  However, I then realised that I’d forgotten Thumper.  Seeing as rabbits are my spirit animal I didn’t really have any other choice to but to go with the bunny!

7. What is your favourite song of the era?

This one’s easy.  It has to be “When you wish upon a star”. My little girl is currently doing a youth theatre version of Pinocchio and it’s reminded me just how beautiful this song is.  It’s also basically the theme to all of Disney, as it plays over the Disney castle logo (and is played by the Disney cruise ships) so for me it’s probably the most important Disney song ever!

8. What do you consider to be the most underrated film of the era?

This is a really hard question as apart from Snow White I think they’re all pretty underrated.  They’re certainly not the most commercial or well know of all Disney films.  Probably the least-appreciated is Fantasia, as it doesn’t have a “story”.  But the different segments are all so beautiful and whenever I hear one of the featured pieces of music I can’t help but remember the scenes that are in the film.  It’s a great way to introduce children to classical music.

9. What is your favourite thing about this era?

This is the era that started it all.  Snow White was completely groundbreaking in terms of feature length animation and without these five films the face of animation in general might have been very different.  Without these films, there wouldn’t be a Walt Disney Animation Studios and then where would we be?

10. What is your least favourite thing about this era?

Apart from Snow White, these really aren’t my favourite films from the Disney universe.  Bambi, Dumbo and Pinocchio are pretty bleak in places and Fantasia has a few dark moments as well.  I much prefer it when Disney became a bit more lighthearted.  And I always prefer a Princess film!

So there you have it.  Thank you so much to Jamie for tagging me.  I’ve really enjoyed writing this post and thinking about films I usually push to the background.

I don’t really know many Disney bloggers (apart from the ones who’ve already done this challenge) so I honestly don’t know who to tag.  So I’m going to cheat slightly and invite everyone to do it, if you want to.  I know I always want to join in tag posts, but I don’t always get invited.  So if you’re sat there thinking you’d love to join in – get writing!

Just remember to send me the link when you do so I can read your answers!
